First Treasures, Art for Young Collectors: Tomorrow’s art patrons are today’s children; with this in mind, The Smoky Hill River Festival created the First Treasures tent. Here, children between the ages of 4 and 13 may purchase artwork donated or consigned by River Festival exhibiting artists. There is no fee to participate, only the cost of the artwork ($5 or less); entry is by time-sensitive tickets distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until supply runs out. Each ticket is marked with a specific entry-window time in thirty-minute increments; after each session, tables are restocked with new artwork, ensuring quality throughout the day.
At entry time, volunteers guide children through the tent while parents/caregivers wait outside by the exit. This way, children are free to browse the art and choose a piece, all priced at $5 or less, that attracts them. Once a selection has been made and purchased, children are given a map highlighting the artist’s booth. Children and their adults are encouraged to seek out the artist to learn more about the work, the process by which it was created, and the artist as a person.
How does a child participate?
Entry-window tickets become available at the First Treasures tent at 10:00 am on Saturday. Supply depends on the number of artworks provided and, therefore, is limited in quantity.
Children must be between the ages of 4-13 to participate.
Hours of operation: 10:15 am – 1:30 pm, Saturday, June 15 only. See map for tent location.
